The Australian Human Rights Institute’s Global Student Fellowship program provides students with financial support to undertake a placement at a leading international development or human rights organisation in Australia or the Asia–Pacific region.

Key dates

  • Monday, 22 June 2026: Applications open
  • Wednesday, 1 July 2026: Online information session from 1-1.45pm
  • Sunday, 19 July 2026: Applications close
  • July/August 2026: Application review and shortlisting for interviews
  • 17 August-4 September 2026: Shortlisted applicants attend interviews with the Australian Human Rights Institute (a second interview may be required outside of this period with the host organisation).
  • September/October 2026: Application outcomes sent to all applicants
  • Wednesday, 4 November 2026:  Compulsory, in-person pre-departure session
  • November/December 2026: Student preparation for placement
  • 4 January 2027-12 February 2027: Fellowship period (unless otherwise noted)
  • March 2027: End of program celebration event.

What are the eligibility criteria? 

  • Applicants must be a student enrolled in any UNSW degree by coursework. Strong priority will be given to students in their penultimate year of study.
  • Applicants must have at least one subject to complete upon return from their Fellowship in Term 1, 2027.
  • Applicants must have a WAM of 70+ at the time of applying.
  • Applicants must have the ability to complete the fellowship without compromising their studies, including assessments and examination periods.
  • Applicants should have a demonstrated, strong interest and desire for a career in human rights and/or international development.

How do I apply?

Applications open Monday, 22 June 2026 and close Sunday, 19 July 2026. Applications are to be submitted via the online form linked below during these dates.

Applicants are required to answer a set of questions and upload a CV as part of the application process. CVs should be up to date and include education, professional and volunteer experience (max. 2 pages).

The Australian Human Rights Institute will host an online information session on Wednesday, 1 July from 1-1.45pm where prospective applicants can ask questions and be provided with information about the application process and how Global Student Fellows are selected.

Students’ academic transcript will also be considered as part of applications.
