The Friedrich Naumann Foundation (FNF) Afri GreenPitch Challenge 2026 ($20, 000 in Prizes)

Westerwelle Startup Haus Mombasa and GreenCape, in partnership with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation (FNF), invite innovators and entrepreneurs with economically viable green economy solutions to enter the 2026 FNF Afri GreenPitch Challenge. This exciting Afri edition expands the original GreenPitch Challenge, which has run annually since 2017 in South Africa, by extending its reach into Southern and East Africa.

2026 FNF Afri GreenPitch Challenge for Green Entrepreneurs

Westerwelle Startup Haus Mombasa and GreenCape, in partnership with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation (FNF), invite innovators and entrepreneurs with economically viable green economy solutions to enter the 2026 FNF Afri GreenPitch Challenge. This exciting Afri edition expands the original GreenPitch Challenge, which has run annually since 2017 in South Africa, by extending its reach into Southern and East Africa.

Participants are invited to enter their pre-growth green business solutions to stand a chance of pitching to a panel of esteemed judges and investors. The competition features shark tank-style networking events that will be physically hosted in Kenya (Nairobi) and South Africa (Cape Town) during September 2026.

About the 2026 FNF Afri GreenPitch Challenge

GreenCape and Westerwelle Startup Haus Mombasa, supported by FNF Africa, offer their dedicated support to innovators and entrepreneurs operating within the green economy landscape. The primary goal of the challenge is to identify, showcase, and accelerate businesses that provide tangible solutions to environmental challenges while maintaining commercial viability. By expanding into East Africa, the program aims to foster cross-border collaboration and drive sustainable economic growth across the continent.

Who Should Enter the Challenge?

Innovators and entrepreneurs who have developed economically viable green economy business solutions are highly encouraged to apply. The challenge is specifically designed for businesses that have moved past the ideation stage. The business idea must be at the pre-growth phase, meaning the enterprise is formally registered, currently trading in the market, generating actual sales, and actively looking for series A funding to scale operations.

Eligibility Requirements

To successfully participate in the 2026 FNF Afri GreenPitch Challenge, applicants must meet specific criteria regarding their business sector, operational phase, and physical location.

Eligible Green Economy Sectors

Your green economy solution must be clearly positioned within one of the following targeted sectors:

  • Circular economy and waste management
  • Renewable energy solutions
  • Sustainable agriculture practices
  • Sustainable mobility alternatives
  • Water and wastewater management

Required Business Phase

As highlighted, the business solution must be in the pre-growth phase. The venture must be a legally registered entity that is actively trading and generating revenue. Early-stage ideas or concepts that have not yet achieved market sales do not qualify for this specific pitch competition.

Geographic Location Criteria

The business must be physically based and operating within one of the following eligible African countries:

  • Botswana
  • eSwatini
  • Kenya
  • Lesotho
  • Namibia
  • South Africa
  • Tanzania

Key Event Dates for 2026

Applicants should note the following critical timeline milestones to ensure their submissions are prepared and submitted on time:

  • Entries open: 29 May 2026
  • Entries close: 30 June 2026
  • Finalists announced: 15 July 2026
  • Pitch preparation workshop: 5 August 2026 (Located in Cape Town, offered in a hybrid format)
  • Pitching event for Southern Africa: 3 September 2026
  • Pitching event for East Africa: 25 September 2026

Competition Prizes and Benefits

The winner and finalists of the 2026 FNF Afri GreenPitch Challenge will be awarded a comprehensive range of cash and in-kind prizes. For the Southern Africa track, the total prize pool value is approximately $20,000.

The prize package is structured to ensure long-term business growth and includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • A cash prize awarded directly to the overall winner
  • A full-day, intensive workshop focused on investment strategies, hosted exclusively for all finalists by RMB Ventures
  • Ongoing mentoring support from industry experts
  • Direct access to a curated network of potential funders and investors to accelerate the scaling of the business idea
