FemDigiNomics Internship Program 2026: 7 Positions for Women-Centred Data & AI Platform

The Africa Centre for Health Systems and Gender Justice is inviting applications for seven internship positions under its FemDigiNomics project. The program offers hands-on experience in data science, AI, research, community engagement, and financial inclusion, with a focus on women’s economic empowerment and health equity.

FemDigiNomics is a women-centred data and intelligence platform being developed by the Africa Centre. Building on HerEconomics, the platform uses community-generated data, Swahili natural language processing, responsible AI, and participatory research to strengthen women’s financial inclusion, livelihood resilience, and health-informed economic empowerment.

Available Internship Positions

1. Data and Research Intern – Support collection, cleaning, organisation, and analysis of HerEconomics and FemDigiNomics data. Ideal for candidates with background in statistics, economics, public health, gender studies, or data science.

2. NLP and AI Intern – Support development of English and Swahili language resources and AI workflows. Ideal for candidates with background in computer science, AI, NLP, or computational linguistics with interest in African languages.

3. Responsible AI and Data Governance Intern – Support development of ethical, safe, and community-centred data systems. Ideal for candidates with background in law, public policy, ethics, data governance, or information management.

4. Financial Inclusion and Partnerships Intern – Support development of pathways connecting women to financial services. Ideal for candidates with background in economics, finance, business, or development studies.

5. Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Intern – Support design and implementation of systems tracking outcomes and impact. Ideal for candidates with background in M&E, statistics, public health, or social sciences.

6. Community Engagement and Programme Intern – Support implementation with grassroots partners and women’s groups. Fluency in Swahili required. Ideal for candidates with background in community development, gender studies, social work, or public health.

7. Product, Communications and Learning Intern – Support documentation, storytelling, and communication of programme insights. Ideal for candidates with background in communications, journalism, design, or development studies.

Cross-Cutting Requirements for All Interns

  • Strong interest in women’s economic opportunity, gender justice, financial inclusion, and health equity

  • Respect for community knowledge, lived experience, and ethical data practices

  • Ability to work with low-income women and grassroots partners with dignity and sensitivity

  • Good writing, documentation, and communication skills

  • Fluency in English and Swahili

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team

  • Willingness to learn across research, programme implementation, technology, and community engagement
