Yale World Fellows 2027: Fully Funded Residency for Global Leaders

Applications are now open for the 2027 Maurice R. Greenberg World Fellows Program at Yale University, the institution’s flagship four-month, full-time residential fellowship for extraordinary leaders from across the globe, with a closing deadline of 2pm Eastern Time on Wednesday, December 2, 2026.

Housed within Yale’s International Leadership Center at the Jackson School of Global Affairs, the programme has been selecting leaders of demonstrated impact since 2002. Its alumni network now spans more than 450 World Fellows contributing to their communities in over 100 countries, connected to each other and to Yale.

What Fellows Actually Do

Each year, a diverse cohort of World Fellows spends four months in residence at Yale, from mid-August to mid-December, growing intellectually, sharing knowledge, strengthening skills, and expanding networks.

The weekly rhythm is anchored by two seminars. In Good Society, Fellows present to each other their vision for making the world better, what they do professionally, and how they contribute to building the good society. In Salon, Fellows host distinguished guests for discussions that expand their knowledge and challenge their views.

Beyond the seminars, Fellows receive individual and group coaching and skills development training, can audit many of the 2,000-plus courses offered at Yale, work on individual or collaborative projects, and conduct independent research.

The campus engagement runs both ways. Fellows give talks and sit on panels across Yale, sharing expertise with students and faculty, and they mentor Yale students through the Student Liaison Program, with student liaisons in turn helping Fellows stage events and settle into life at the university.

Who Yale Is Looking For

The programme’s own description of its fellows sets a high bar: leaders of character, integrity, energy and talent; dynamic, creative, disruptive and innovative; selfless leaders who serve, inspire and motivate others, with demonstrated impact, rising careers, and ambition to grow to their full potential.

The formal eligibility requirements are:

  • Applicants should be between five and twenty-five years into their professional careers, with demonstrated and significant accomplishments at regional, national, or international level. The average World Fellow is 39, though there is no minimum or maximum age limit
  • Applicants must be citizens of a country other than the United States. Dual US citizens are eligible, but strong preference goes to candidates whose work is focused outside the United States
  • Applicants must be fluent in English, with an excellent command of the language essential to full participation
  • World Fellows must be in residence at Yale in New Haven for the entirety of the programme, mid-August through mid-December

Selection Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate:

  • An established record of extraordinary achievement and integrity
  • A commitment to the good society and to making a positive impact locally, nationally, or internationally
  • A promise of a future career in leadership and notable global impact
  • A special capacity for critical, creative, entrepreneurial, and strategic thinking
  • A likelihood to benefit from the programme and contribute to the global perspective on Yale’s campus
  • A commitment to the programme’s rigorous activities, full-time residence at Yale for its entire duration, and frequent mentoring and speaking on campus

How to Apply

The application is entirely online, with no paper forms. There is a $20 application fee.

Applicants submit a résumé or curriculum vitae of maximum three pages, a personal statement of maximum 600 words, three letters of recommendation, and a brief video statement, along with the fee. Before the deadline, applicants can work on the application at any time, upload materials, and request recommendation letters after creating an account. Comprehensive instructions appear within the online application itself.

Admission is fiercely competitive: the programme receives thousands of applications globally for an extremely limited number of places, and each cohort is geographically balanced across a wide range of professions, talents, experience, cultures, and perspectives.

What the Package Covers

Selected Fellows receive a compensation package covering the realities of four months abroad:

  • A taxable stipend to cover the costs of living in New Haven
  • A modest, furnished one or two-bedroom apartment for the duration of the programme
  • Medical insurance
  • Round-trip travel from the home country

In Their Own Words

Alumni consistently describe the fellowship as transformative rather than transactional.

“The Yale World Fellow Program isn’t just a milestone. It’s a living, evolving relationship that shapes leaders,” said Idayat Hassan, a 2015 Yale World Fellow from Nigeria.

Manasi Subramaniam, a 2022 World Fellow from India, described the gift of unallocated time: “The fellowship gave me something I had not realised I needed: time that was not already spoken for, and a group of people who took that time seriously.”
